~ FREE-SPEECHY Prof Douglas Farrow sends along word of an upcoming McGill Conference in Montreal. October 2009 – a series of lectures on Faith and Society by Oliver and Joan O’Donovan of the University of Edinburgh, and a round-table on rights and religious freedom.

Pluralism, Religion & Public Policy was designed to bring together people from academia, law, politics and religious institutions to debate some of the fundamental issues that must be faced in addressing such questions.

As a backgrounder, his book RECOGNIZING RELIGION IN A SECULAR SOCIETY: Essays in Pluralism, Religion and Public Policy edited by Douglas Farrow (McGill-Queens 2004) is a must-read: “Essays by world-class theorists and practitioners in religion, governance and law, including Christian, Jewish, and Muslim contributions”.

How Teh Binksmeister Rolls

~ BLOGGING ABOUT BLOGGING may be a little too meta, but it must be said that aside from the drudge-factor (the work, not the site), it’s a pleasure. Why? So many smart good people mostly donating their time, efforts, and ideas to the great conversation of civilization in large and small details. It’s like a living library, or a giant outdoor tea-party, where you can drift in and out amongst friends, allies, even enemies, to chat, listen, and ponder.

Every once in a while (for me, about every 2 months, I get a little bored of the work-side of it. To collect the links for an average posting takes 8-10 hours at most; but then to actually code & lovingly hand-craft the links into a format, add amusing/ offensive titles, pictures, and commentary– plus get a little time-wasting online in on various other topics of passing interest– takes another 4+ hours.

Then there’s life in meatspace, the wife & twins, the dog, household duties (yes, in that one respect I’m a sensitive new age guy, betimes). So when sickness calls, not infrequently, it does truly throw a squirrel into the works.

~ IN TERMS OF OUR MODERN FREEDOMS, we can look to the ancient clash between Christ & Caesar for an account of the right relationship between individual and state, soul and community.

For Romans of the Imperial period, religion was part of the state apparatus of loyalty to Rome and her divine Emperors. The Caesars were sons of God, bringers of plenty and peace and victory, top of the structured society, the key of the whole Roman idea. Into this came Christianity.

Caesar is Lord, said the Romans.

Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father, said the Christians.

Oh, you’ve got another god for the pantheon– how delightful, put him next to all the others.

Sorry, but no, Jesus is the Only Son of the Most High God, and loving Saviour of each soul and the whole world, and Lord of All, said the Christians.

Um– that’s atheism, and rebellion against the state, and disloyalty to the Emperor…. submit to Caesar as god and Lord, or suffer the consequences, said the Romans.

God bless you, and do what you must, but Jesus is Lord. We pay our taxes, obey the laws, and honour Caesar as king, but not as Lord or god, said the Christians. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Full stop.

And so began four centuries of sporadic and localized, sometimes horrific and widespread oppression, persecution, and slaughter of Christians. It was a battle between the God-loved and saved self, in the Church, versus the almighty state and empire, in the person of the Emperor and his representatives, and the earthly utopia of the Pax Romana, given by and embodied in the Emperor. After Christ’s death & resurrection, families, communities, the Empire itself suffered a painful rebirth.

Witnesses, Even Unto Death

The young Roman woman Perpetua and all the other martyrs remind us that sometimes– and for us– the choice to stand can be particular, personal, and ultimate. The Romans were indeed overcome by the Christians, who in the face of such things, sang, prayed for each other an their enemies, forgave, helped one another, and died as if that were the very gate to heaven and the nearer presence of their Lord, Jesus Christ, crucified and risen. “The blood of the martyrs” said one Christian observer, ‘is the seed of the church.”

In 2009, this means a very great deal for Christians around the world, suffering now; for weaker Western Christians, fearful or suffering or uncertain of faith; and to those who oppose the supreme claims of an almighty state, to regulate the thoughts, beliefs, practices, ideas, and speech of each and all of us. The HRCs are just the tip of the iceberg– the soft tyranny of the chattering and ruling class, the desire for enforced social peace and ‘harmony’ at any price, the utopia almost here– these are very familiar threats, and is partly the result of the receding tide of faith. We must have rules, hopes, some order– so we must invent, impose, demand, even if our resulting heaven on earth is truly the image of the inferno itself.

It’s no accident that many Christians– and Roman Catholic Christians– are in the vanguard fighting for human freedom, dignity, life, and religious liberty. It’s there in the beginning, and the battle continues until now. Sometimes the Christians, Jews, libertarians and others fighting alongside each other make for interesting politics, but we all share a fundamental conviction of the worth and value of each person, overagainst the claims of the state, the mob, or judicial/ armed force.

~ THOUGHTS ON POLYGAMY— No thanks. Unless you live in a tribal society, or one in which women are chattels, it would be too much like marrying a book club, or a Church Women’s guild. Four times the nagging.

So we have Canadian courts giving the punishment of polygamy a pass– perhaps in deference to relativism, multiculturalism, or Islam. A few things need to be said.

First, we already– by virtue of easy divorce and serial concubinage & premarital fornication– already have an accepted form of polygamy in the West. To heck with kids, and the poverty resulting– the sexual revolution has compromised and touched us all.

Secondly, within the enclaves of immigrant Muslim communities, we have Islamic clergy willing to marry multiple women to a man (as according to Muhammed’s endless hunger for women), and people willing to be so joined– sometimes women brought from Ye Olde Homeland specifically for that purpose. So we have Western Law-free sharia zones, where ‘Allah’s Law’ is in force.

Finally, every objective study shows that polygamy is a stagnating social and economic force, keeping women servile, stupid, undervalued– and easily discarded and replaced. So much for all the talk of how Islam ‘liberates’ women. It also turns them primarily into sexual and reproductive objects– hence the Muhammedan notion that heaven is an eternal Spring Break with all the nookie you want, 72 divinely enslaved juicy hotties per man.

By contrast, the Judaeo-Christian/ Greco-Roman tradition is liberating. It starts with Adam and Eve, both made in the image of God, the original couple complementary halves of humanity, complete in each other, united by God. The Jews granted women the right of divorce– and of regaining her marriage-dowry, besides. Rome and Greece also had laws and customs protecting women, and acknowledging their inherent humanity and dignity.

So the next time some Islamo-apologist goes on about how Islam loves women, remember that he’s contrasting his religion with the secularized Marxist free-for-all of the West at it’s worst, not with the true, deepest, and fullest tradition of who we are, can be, and should be. ~

~ TEH WEIRDING— The dog & monkey show of post-9/11 airport security caught up with me this summer, on the U.S. vacation-trip. Hadn’t travelled by air to the U.S. since 2001.

Shoes off (thank you, Shoe Bomber). Only certain sizes of liquids (thank you, watter-bottle bombers), no sharps (thanks, 9/11 suicide pilots) but, oddly enough, not much real checking of the carry-on bags beyond that. One of my boys, Meebz, got extra harassment from the nice lady for a very slightly oversized gift-bottle of Maple Syrup. My bag had all my meds– and these were ignored.

Whilst at Teh Binks-dad, I read a hacker magazine on how a would-be bad guy might easily circumvent the boarding-pass/ no-fly list thing with a very little computer knowledge. And if I were a serious terrorist… taking stuff onboard as a passenger? Really? Old school.. there are lots of other ways to circumvent airport security. But let’s ignore that.

The whole reverse-racist circus of forcing a Canadian middle-aged guy with his twin boys to go through the shoe-and-maple syrup security fiasco is so we don’t target Muslims, particularly recent converts, or men from the Middle East, or of Middle Eastern extraction. That’s bad, and racist. So we make everybody go through the stupid, to show we’re not racist, and we’re egalitarian, and some guy with 250 year roots in Canada is really just as dangerous as a young angry Muslim from a terror-loving mosque and/or family with a gleam in his eye for 72 hot post-martyrdom babes.

On the way back, I actually got pulled aside in the U.S. security because I ‘looked suspicious’– by which the dolt in charge saw a man sweating after being required to take of his shoes, coat, and put the cane through the X-ray, keep track of the kids, and try not to lose the boarding passes, all in 1 minute, with a line-up behind, at 6am, having already been up for hours. Could I do the Flamenco for you whilst I’m at it, nice security-woman? Sweaty would-be-perp me turned out to be a sweaty irritable tourist. Score another one for politically correct Indignities International.

Sorry, I’m not impressed. Post-9/11 airport security is a joke, and if so many of the would-be terrorists weren’t such unimaginative idiots for Allah, we’d all be in a very great deal of trouble.

Perhaps we should just strip-search, orifice-probe, and waterboard and humiliate all the innocent people, since it’s forbidden to do so to the bad guys. That we are civilized or subservient or both is the only reason to undergo teh silly of modern security screening. I think this is the greater plot: get us all submitting, and then when the stealth jihad takes over, we’ll all be fruit ripe for the picking. ~

You Know Who You Are…

~ AS MENTIONED A while back, teh Binks is a big fan of the TV-show NCIS. Actors, plots, conservative themes– all good. And last week’s season opener was a bulls-eye.. except for two details. [SPOILER] A final scene shows NCIS-boss Gibbs sniping from a mile or two away. Fine. Except the shot comes straight through the window and hits the target. Sniper bullets from that distance are not flat (like a short-range rifle shot), but ballistic– they drop down to the target, like a basket-ball free-throw. Some military advisor needs to get his details right. Second, Gibbs shows up at the penultimate moment, 30 seconds after the shot. That’s a 30-second mile.. somebody call The Guinness Book of World Records, or the Olympics or something. Does that keep my nerd-cred up? ~
